11.7.24 ~ Negation Skills
Good morning
Whether it's marriage, courting, business, politics, family dynamics, or discipling individuals within and without a 'church' setting, negotiation is the most important skill to acquire! Hands down. No question! Non-negotiable skill! The only thing that makes negotiation successful in any communication, or in any human exchange of any kind, there’s always only one point that must be remembered.
Have you ever stopped to think of how we are constantly negotiating all day, every day? Now, while negotiation might conjure up images of hostage situations in Gaza or trade delegations in large, corporate mergers and acquisitions, like in our current government structure, the reality is negotiation is around us all the time.
Because we are all interconnected into one body (Rom. 12:4,5; 1 Cor. 10:17; 12:12-20; Eph. 4:4) and because, whether introverted or extroverted, we are a social species. It is a fundamental part of our interaction in every facet of life. Anytime we’re trying to influence or get somebody to agreement on anything, We’re negotiating...from getting your children dressed for school in the morning...to getting your spouse to agree to pick up the kids from school...to getting your boss to let you have a more flexible work schedule...wanting to change the project strategy that you’ve already agreed upon...to you getting your desk neighbor to stop crunching chips while you're on a call...to wanting to go to Chick-fil-A for lunch versus the deli, where you can get a good salad...to negotiating for raises and promotions...to time off to recoup from the stress of life...to terms with vendors, clients, partners, and investors and inquiries...to my favorite, discipleship (Matt. 28:18-20). It's all negotiation.
Have you ever considered how the seed of our faith, Abraham, negotiated 318 individuals to leave the idolatrous practice in the Ur of Chaldees to follow the One True God of all Creation and, in unity, go rescue his POW nephew Lot (Gen. 14:14)? I'll guarantee...negotiation!
The importance of negotiation cannot be overstated. Negotiation holds the key to successfully maneuvering through every detail of life, resolving conflicts, and getting ahead spiritually, emotionally, physically, relationally and financially. In all negotiations, it still comes down to one thing! And enquiring minds want to know!
It’s figuring out what 'they' want And how you can help them get it. That’s it. The end, you see a negotiation is simply an exchange of value. Getting anyone to do anything comes down to simply identifying why they would want to do it. That’s your main job in negotiation. To create the overly, but mostly misunderstood win-win scenario. It’s your job to figure out what winning is for them. You have to figure out what they want, not what you think they want, maybe even not what they initially claimed they want, but underneath it all what they really want. Figure out what their win is, and then see if their win gets you your win to connect the two. That’s it. Simple, not easy, but really really simple. The only hard part is figuring out what they really want. What is a win for them?
As you wake up and spend time with your spouse, kiddos, or your endeavors for the day, every communication will be based on negotiation! The Most High does it with us constantly. Wouldn't it make sense we do it with one another? Your success depends on it!
Shalom
