1.16.25 ~ What’s in a Name?!
Good morning!
We are in the book of names/shemot, the book of Exodus/shemot. Names are very important! They are personal. They are how you're identified and they speak volumes about who you are. When I think of 'you'...a plethora of thoughts surge through my mind like an endorphin rush. Similarly, when we read a 'name/shem' in the Torah, they aren't just names/shemot, they are who you are! Your character. Your essence. Your potential! And, for me, it's super duper important to realize that our Creator (Psa. 139:14; Col. 1:16) to God, you are much more than an endorphin rush...you are His inheritance (Ex. 34:9eut. 9:26; Psa. 28:9; 33:12; 94:14; etc.) and He's downright giddy about you! (Psa. 147:4; Isa. 40:26; Am. 5:8; Num. 6:25).
There are no wasted letters and no wasted spaces in the Torah (1st five books of our bible). Every mark, down to the smallest jot or tittle (Matt. 5:18), and every anomaly (enlarged letters, small letters, broken letters, backwards letters, special markings) has deep significance.
The book of Exodus/Shemot/names begins with a Vav/and, which tells us it is directly connected to the book of Genesis. Strangely enough, but no surprise, it begins with the exact same phrase as Genesis 46:8.
"And these are the names of the children of Israel..." Gen. 46:8
"And these are the names of the children of Israel..." Ex. 1:1
In the 1st listing we have the history of the families and in the 2nd listing we have a prophetic foretelling of the families, which will be repeated in our day leading up to the 2nd Exodus...coming soon to a theater near you - tickets required :-) (Jer. 16:14,15; 31:7-11; Isa. 2:2-4; 11:11,12; Jer. 30:7-11; Eze. 11:17-20; 36:24-29; 37:22-28; Am. 9:8-15; Mic. 4:1-5; etc.).
The book of Exodus begins with listing out the names of the sons again. And, when each son dies, there is a new Pharaoh who rises up who doesn't know Joseph (Ex. 1:8). How could anyone not know who Joseph was after all he did? That's like someone in America saying who is Donald Trump (no comparison between Joseph and President Elect Trump)? There must be more to that thought...but, we must digress :-)
Why mention the 12 sons again? Is there a prophetic message in their names? Could there be a message here that reveals the redemptive message of God's children from Egypt to the Promised Land (Deut. 6:23-25). Could this be the key that unlocks the 'why do these things happen in my life'? 1 Cor. 9:24-10:12)?
Let me wet your whistle with some quick thoughts on the boys' names:
-Reuben/to see, alludes to the fact that all of Israel's Egyptian afflictions were seen by the Lord and not ignored (Ex. 3:7).
-Simeon/to hear, alludes to the fact that God has heard all their cries and He was ready to take action (Ex. 3:7).
-Levi/to join, alludes to the fact how God joined them in their distress (Ex. 3:8-12).
-Judah/praise alludes to the fact how the people praised God with song when they were delivered from their enemy (Ex. 15:1ff).
-Issachar/my reward, alludes to the fact that the Lord gave the people the spoils of Egypt as recompense for the years of servitude (Ex. 12:35,36)
-Zebulon/good gift of his presence, alludes to the fact that God would dwell in the midst of His people in the Tabernacle that they would build their Bridegroom King (Ex. 25:8).
-Benjamin/son of my right hand, alludes to the fact that God would deliver Israel from their enemies at the Sea of Reeds by His mighty right hand (Ex. 15:6,12).
-Dan/judge, alludes to the fact that God would judge the nation of Egypt with the plagues and their destruction (Ex. 14:29-31)
-Naphtali/wrestling alludes to the fact that God would wrestle with Pharaoh's heart as well as the Israelites throughout the journey.
-Gad/troop alludes to the fact that God would raise up an army to defeat Amalek as well as other Kings along the way (Ex. 17:8-14).
-Asher/happy, alludes to the fact of Israel's happiness when they reflect on all that God would do for them in the 40 year journey (Psa. 145). And happy we will be when God does this again over our oppressive enemies!
-Joseph/The Lord will add, alludes to the fact that God will raise up another leader who will deliver Israel, namely Moses, then our Messiah, Yeshua, to the Land of our Inheritance.
It's quite interesting the prophetic significance of Jacob‘s family and the rich spiritual planting into the darkness of the exile in the land of Egypt/mitzraim. Which begs us to ask a question: "What's in a name"? What is the meaning of my name? (Ask me and I'll tell you the meaning of your name in Hebrew :-)
"A good name is more valuable than fine oil. And the day you die is better than the day you were born" (Eccl. 7:1)
What Solomon is saying in Ecclesiastes 7:1 is, the naming of the 12 sons is of greater value than the anointing oil of the Priests and Kings of Israel. Hence, Aaron, the High Priest (patterned after Yeshua, in the heavenly Tabernacle), bears on his shoulders and over his heart the names of the 12 tribes. And if you are Abraham's seed, your name is on His heart and on His shoulders...Wow (Heb. 7:25)!
Shalom!
