9.9.25 ~ More than the 10
Good morning!
In last night's zoom call we connected a lot of pieces of the "inheritance puzzle" found within this week's Torah portion, Ki Tavo/when you come in. Through the story of Joseph, his bones, the land of Shechem and Jacob's well we drew some pretty straightforward conclusions on living a life of blessing and curses. When we realize Paul was referencing the valley of dry bones (Eze. 37) in Ephesians 4, our spiritual antennas should go up on how to live "perfect/telios" in relationship to our inheritance which is obtained by walking in Spirit and in Truth. You'll want a notepad and a writing utensil for this simple and graphic revelation on why to be obedient to all of God's commandments; or is that impossible? Inquiring minds want to know :-)

In our modern world of religion we have become enamored with the "10 commandments" (Ex. 20) without really observing these covenant terms in Spirit and truth. Ironically, when Yeshua was tempted He didn't reference the "big 10", but rather the entire Torah (1st 5 books of Moses).
"And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God" (Matt. 4:3,4)
Where did He get this from? Deuteronomy 8:3
And He humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that He might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God doth man live. (Deut. 8:3)

Our daily lives teach us that we must live by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. Yeshua was quite familiar with the word; He is the Word (Jn. 1) .
In the rest of this morning's study I want to randomly choose statements from Paul and John that are directly from God's instructions/Torah. When Paul was on trial, he reviled the High priest incorrectly (Acts 23:4,5). Any idea where he got that from? Exodus 22:8.
When Paul asks, is there any unrighteousness in God? Does He lack mercy or compassion (Rom. 9:14). Do you know where he's quoting from? Exodus 33:19.
When Paul commands us not to eat with certain types of unfaithful, immoral brothers (1 Cor. 5:11). He got his definitions from Leviticus 18:22-26. Let’s look a little deeper at the verse in Corinthians again..
But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat. (1 Cor. 5:11)
Whoso privily slandereth his neighbour, him will I cut off: him that hath an high look and a proud heart will not I suffer. (Psa. 101:5)
Combine Psa. 101:5 and Leviticus 19:16 and you've got his source :-) If we keep reading...
For what have I to do to judge them also that are without? do not you judge them that are within? But they that are without the Lord judges. Therefore put away from among yourselves that wicked person.
(1 Cor. 5:13,14 [Deut. 24:7; Dt. 19:19])
Paul misquotes Romans 10:6-8 from Deuteronomy 30:11-14 by substituting Yeshua, God's Word in the flesh (Jn. 1:14), for God's commandments, which are not too difficult or too hard to reach.
Moses goes on in Deuteronomy 30 by saying,
See, I have set before thee this day life and good, and death and evil; In that I command thee this day to love the Lord thy God to walk in his ways, and to keep his commandments and his statutes and his judgments, that thou mayest live and multiply: and the Lord your God shall bless thee in the land whither thou goest to possess it.
(Deut. 30:15,16)
Are you seeing a pattern :-)?
1 Cor. 9:9-12 with Deut. 25:4
How about 2 Corinthians 6:14-7:1?
Do not be bound together with unbelievers; for what partnership has righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship has light with darkness? Or what harmony has the Messiah with Belial, or what has a believer in common with an unbeliever? Or what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; just as the Lord said, “I will dwell in them and walk among them; and I will be their God and they shall be My people. “Therefore, come out from their midst and be separate,” says the Lord “And do not touch what is unclean; and I will welcome you. “And I will be a father to you, and you shall be sons and daughters to me,” says the Lord Almighty. (2 Cor. 6:14-7:2)
To find out these definitions we need not look any further than Levitifus 11 & 15.
Just in the book of Romans alone, Paul quotes from the TaNaKh +95 times.
Peter, quoting from Leviticus 11 and 19 commands us to be holy even as God is holy (1 Pet. 1:15,16).
The Jerusalem council setting the rules of what is expected with new Gentile converts (Acts 15:20) is quoting from Leviticus 17-20.
The Apostle John says, and He Himself is the satisfaction for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world. Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. (1 Jn. 2:2-3)
By this we know that we abide in Him, and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit. (1 Jn. 4:13)
He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. (1 Jn. 2:4)
But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked. (1 Jn. 2:5,6)
How did Yeshua, the Word of God, walk?
May we do the same as we head into the fall feast season and live the life of Mt. Gerizim; the life filled with blessing (Deut. 28:1-14). Not Mt. Ebal, a life filled with curses (Deut. 28:15-68)!
Shalom,
Alan
