When and how does the Lord/Yahweh speak? Scripture reminds us that He consistently makes the first move but does not reveal Himself until we turn aside with definite focus. He will use anything and everything to grab our attention! To say His love for us is beyond all human reasoning is an understatement, and because of that, He is passionate for our encounters with Him.
One of His most amazing "attention grabbers" is to use natural events to encourage us into a supernatural encounter. Moses was privy to such a technique when a wilderness bush caught on fire (Ex. 3:2). Nothing "unnatural" about that in the Sinai wilderness, but there was something "supernatural" about this burning bush—it was not consumed. Fortunately for Moses' sake, he was not preoccupied with "eating, drinking, and marrying" (Ex. 2:20–21) to become dull in his senses to the supernatural, natural occurrences around him.
It was not until Moses turned aside to see the burning bush that Yahweh—the Personal Covenant-Keeping God/Elohim—began to speak to him (Ex. 3:3–4):
"And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed. And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt. And when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I."
(Ex. 3:2–4)
A wise man told me years ago—and it was reiterated again this morning in the recesses of my mind and heart—that "it is a lot easier to steer a vehicle that is moving than one that is parked." Keep walking by faith (2 Cor. 5:7; Deut. 12:9)!
Look for the Lord God to reveal Himself in a supernatural way through the natural events of life. When you turn aside from the "routine" duties of the day, you will find yourself in the midst of a holy encounter that will knock your sandals right off :-). Keep your eyes open. He loves His encounters with you. There is work to be done. Be careful not to get preoccupied with the routines of the day that you miss the divine revelations that lead you to your calling.
Shabbat Shalom!
Alan
