3 18 26 – Salty Light

Yeshua said to His audience, "You are the light of the world! A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden" (Matt. 5:14). Why would Yeshua say this? Did He not just tell us that we are the salt of the earth?

You are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savor, wherewith shall it be salted? It is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.
(Matt. 5:13)

As salt agents on mission, are we not supposed to be agents to prevent decay? Are we not supposed to create hunger and make things taste better? Are we not supposed to be agents that create thirst in others for the living God? After all, like salt, we are all just a bunch of inorganic matter with life breathed into us from the Almighty (Gen. 2:7), and without Him we can do nothing (John 15:5). He calls that which is not as if it already is (Rom. 14:17). Does it not make sense that we should become who He says we already are?

Yeshua is adding a dimension to us that on the surface level appears to be completely unrelated. What do salt and light have in common? That is a million-dollar question.

Did you know that salt emits light? Take a trip down memory lane to your chemistry class. Are you there in your mind? Do you remember? The answer is yes, it does. Every salt—whether it is potassium chloride, sodium chloride, barium chloride, lithium chloride, calcium chloride, or any other salt, whether covalently bonded or ionically bonded—gives off a beautiful light when heated in a flame. Each salt will give off a different color of light. If the salts are heated together, they will produce a white color that will dispel the darkness from a room and create a warm, inviting ambiance (cp. Rom. 12:3–5).

Salt has to do what salt was meant to do if it is going to be a light to the world. It has to be "shaken out" of its container. It can only affect where it is "poured." It can only give off light when it is subjected to "the flame." Properly mixed with other salts, it will produce a beautiful light that repels the darkness and draws interested bystanders who are looking for light for their path.

We are not supposed to be salty like Mrs. Lot—unless there is more to the salty story than we have always heard (Gen. 19:26)! Instead, we are to offer up to Yahweh all that we have with salt (Lev. 2:13)—no corruption, extra tasty, and making people thirsty for more of the good stuff. Salt is so important to Yahweh that He even made a covenant of salt—an incorruptible covenant—with Israel (3/17/26), concerning the King and His coming Kingdom! A beautiful reality that "salty dogs" like yourself will get to enjoy in the coming Day.

Unfortunately, when Yeshua came to Israel—the lost sheep of the house of Israel—He found that they were not living as they should. They were living contrary to the salt covenant given through King David. They were not happy. They were oppressed under the bondage of spiritual man-made laws that kept them in darkness. Instead of being the city on the hill that was a light to the world, they had become sick from the top of their head to the soles of their feet (Isa. 1:2–9). The Faithful City that sat on the hill had forsaken the glory Yahweh had given to her and had become a harlot (Isa. 1:21–23). They were anything but a bunch of "salty dogs"! They had lost their savor and were not good for any Kingdom business. But there was—and is—a remnant (Isa. 1:9).

There was a group of individuals sitting on the hill with Yeshua that day (Matt. 5:1) who longed to be happy! They longed to be what they were created to be: salt and light. They longed to be that City that everyone would see. They clung to forgetting the shame of their past and pressed forward to become that Great City that would shine for all the world to see—the New Jerusalem (Rev. 21–22).

By living a covenant lifestyle, this remnant would change a blind, deaf, lame, and darkened nation and impact the world. How do we know? We are here, are we not? :-)

If it were not for them and Yahweh's faithfulness to His salt covenant, you and I would not be hungering and thirsting for righteousness at this stage of our lives (Matt. 5:5).

My oh my, Yahweh is good! Give Him glory that He specifically made you salt and light. The time has come. It is time to live that salty lifestyle of light.

We can be that City now! We are that City now. Unfortunately, some have built walls—not for protection, but walls that prevent shining. We have isolated ourselves instead of letting our light shine. We have seen that shining a light on the hill makes us an easy target, and it is easier to hide our light. We do not like the thought of people being hostile toward us. We want everyone to "sign up" to be a part of our cultural "salt and light" club.

Reality says: when you act as a preservative, you are going to come in contact with some pretty yucky things. When you are light, you are going to be put into dark areas to bring hope and light. Yes, you will have enemies—that you can count on. That is what happens when you act as a preservative and a light to attract people to Yahweh. He does bless, and He does reward, but it does not come to those who do not act as salt and light.

Salty dogs that give off His light are the seed of Abraham. They are looking for another country (Heb. 11:13–16). They are preparing to be the Bride (Rev. 19:5–6); to be that City that comes down out of heaven adorned as a bride, the New Jerusalem (Rev. 21:2, 9; 22:17).

Salt and light living are not for the faint of heart. Yahweh is looking for us to be who He called us to be!

Go lovingly "aSALT" someone with your light today. Do not hurt them... Light is warm, inviting, instructive, revealing, and healing.

Mrs. Lot details tomorrow.

Shalom,
Alan
